Battle Cry of Freedom (Mary's Lamb)

Battle Cry of Freedom (Lamb eating hurrah!)
Oh, Mary had a little lamb; his fleece was white as snow
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And everywhere that Mary went; the lamb was sure to go
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(CHORUS)
Hurrah for Mary
Hurrah for the Lamb
Hurrah for the soldiers
Who didn't give a damn
If all the lambs in Washington
went marching off to school
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

Oh, Mary had a little lamb
his hoof was black as soot
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
and everywhere the lamb he went
his sooty foot he put
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

Oh, Mary had a little lamb
she fed him very well
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
One day she fed him powder
and she blew him all to pieces*1
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

Oh, Mary had a little lamb
but now the lamb is dead
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
But she still takes him to school
between two slices of fresh bread*2
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

Why do the men love mutton so
The captain he did cry
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
Because it makes their whiskers grow
the sergeant he replied
Shouting the battle cry of freedom*3

(Chorus)

Well, we'd eaten all the ewes;
and we'd eaten all the rams
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And all that we had left then
was Mary's little lamb
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

So we shot him very nicely
and we skinned him very kind
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
and we served him with potatoes
and he really didn't mind
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

Oh and when this war is over
we'll get new ewes and rams
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
and we'll give them all to Mary
and she can have the lambs
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

Mary had a little lamb, it was always on the go;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
So she staked it to a grassy spot along the
Shenandoah;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

(Chorus)

And often she would let it loose,
along the bank to play;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
The soldiers eyed it from the shore
in a slightly thieving way;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

(Chorus)

It swam across the Shenandoah,
the soldiers saw it too;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
And speedily it simmered down
into a mutton stew;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

(Chorus)

And Mary never more did see
her darling little lamb;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!
For the boys in blue they chawed it up
and didn't care a damn;
shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom!

(Chorus)

Oh Mary had a little lamb
She also had a bear
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
I've often seen her little lamb
I've never seen her bear
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

Oh the officers the get good food
They eat pretty fine
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
When it comes to eating lambchops
They ain't getting mine
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

You can eat your hard tack
Though it surely makes you swell
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
And the fellow that invented it
Has surely gone to blazes
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

When Mary had a little lamb
The doctors were surpised
Shouting the battle cry of freedom
But when Old MacDonald had a farm
You should have seen their eyes
Shouting the battle cry of freedom

(Chorus)

NOTES on dear sweet Mary

1 (she could also have blown him all to "well" or
"hell", but since that's what EVERYONE
expects I think it sounds better the way Greg B.
sings it, which is PIECES....!!!!....Ed.)

2(Alternatives I've heard...
But she still takes him to school with her
between two slices of fresh bread

But she still takes him to shool with her
between two hunks of bread)

3( This is my best recollection of the verse
Glen H. always sings...corrections?)

Additional verses will be gladly accepted and
incorporated here, we reserve the right to keep
the story line in the pseudo correct order (she
must have had a number of little lambs, all of
whom suffered pretty much the same fate…).
